Camp Lynchburg – Day One
Thursday, September 23, 2010:
1530: Deploy from driveway in packed vehicle.
1531: Pick up Hannah.
1532: Hit the open road.
Yesterday we left the hood shortly after Katie got home from school. We drove around the corner to pick up Hannah, Taylor’s good friend who was diagnosed with Stage IV Hodgkins just weeks before graduating from high school. She’s doing great – in remission – and her counts are good so she came along with us to surprise Taylor.
I started out driving and didn’t bother with the GPS. It’s such an easy drive! Turnpike to 81 to 64 to 29 and BAM! You’re there. Except the interchange between the Turnpike and 81 is a little tricky and not marked well. The last time we went I was the co-pilot and was able to help Todd because, you know, sometimes it’s hard to drive and navigate all at the same time. This time I was flying solo and I zigged when I should have zagged. No biggy, though. We got back on the right road and only lost a couple of minutes!
The only other faux pas I made was when we were looking for a place to stop for dinner. I thought the sign said “next exit”, but apparently it said something like, “exit in a few”. Of course, everyone starts making their stupid “We’re probably going to end up in New Jersey” jokes and I’m thinking stuff it, all of you, except for Hannah because she’s nice.
Okay. I just have to interject here. How come (Todd – feel free to answer) when he’s driving and I’m the navigator and we get messed up it’s my fault? And then when I’m driving and I’m getting no help and we get messed up it’s my fault?
But I’m not bitter.
Todd took over driving after dinner because I’ve finally accepted that I need to go get my eyes checked since they don’t see so well at night and I definitely need glasses for driving. And can I just say that I was an excellent co-pilot.
But again, I’m not bitter.
We went straight to the college camp to drop off Taylor’s guitars so we didn’t have to take them up to the room and then back down. It was about 10:30 and don’t think I was complaining about the stop before the hotel because I got to see my boy. That short visit made my heart sing. Seriously sing! I could hear it!! I just hope no one else could hear it because it sings like I do.
The first thing he wanted was a pair of clippers. He came down to the parking lot with a beanie on and his longish hair peeking out from underneath and a scruffy beard. He sort of looked like a Rastafarian wannabe. Pictures are forthcoming. We’re taking him for a hair cut tomorrow (his request) and he went straight upstairs after we left and trimmed the facial stuff up.
The four of us said our goodbyes to the Tayminator and then made our way to the hotel. I’m fairly confident that we all slept quite well. Todd got up this morning and went back to the college camp to sit in on Physics and meet his professor counselor.
More to come…
Sounds like a great trip to “camp”. I’m excited to see pictures – I vote that we make it all Todd’s fault 🙂
What possessed Todd to sit in on physics? That course gave me the willies.
Glad everything is going okay!
Peace, Julie
Lol, Rastafarian wanna be. Priceless.
