Let’s Do This!

You see, it’s like this. Todd and I have been talking about getting healthy for a while. Last year I did Weight Watchers for a bit and was fairly successful for the time I was actually on the plan. Once I fell off the wagon, however, I just laid there and watched it roll away. Running to catch up to it seemed like way too much trouble. Slowly over the past year most of the weight I’d lost – which wasn’t a lot – snuck back on. As for Todd, his blood sugars were getting kind of crazy. His doctor was able to stabilize them fairly well with medication, but he would rather manage as much as he can with proper nutrition.

Not only that, but we just want to be healthy. We are going to be pseudo-empty nesters in August and have a lot of plans, people. We won’t be able to do them if we feel like we’re in our 90’s.

So yesterday we met with a dietician. It was a humbling experience, made more so when she asked what we had eaten that day. Mine was pretty bad as I hadn’t eaten much. To make matters worse she asked what I’d had for dinner the night before since it was only 3:00. It’s Kids’ Camp time which means Tuesday the “assignment team” was sequestered in the conference room. So here’s how the food log looked:

Because we’re out of BelVita breakfast biscuits and I found the Metamucil fiber cookies in the back of the cupboard with an expiration date of 2014 so we were good to go. HA! See what I did there? I used “fiber” and “good to go” in the same sentence.

I don’t think I mentioned these were candied pecans. Does that matter? And I did have a yogurt in the fridge, but the kitchen at work seemed much too far away at the time.

I feel that an explanation is in order here. We ate a late lunch of Chick-Fil-A and when I got home from work at nearly 6:00 I wasn’t in the mood for much of anything. Not only that, but by sweet daughter had offered to bring me a large cookies and cream milkshake with extra whip cream and two cherries after work. I was saving room. I was also preparing to meet with the dietician the next day so this was kind of my last hurrah.

This information was written in ink in my chart. It will be a part of my record forever. The only consolation I have is that Todd’s wasn’t much better. It was a lot of crackers and cheese, chips and cheese, crackers and chips and cheese, some salsa and a smoothie.

The appointment was over an hour and a half and I’m actually excited about this. She didn’t tell us a lot of stuff I didn’t already know, but she explained the why of some of it. Not only that, there’s just something about having an expert tell you these things to encourage you.

This dietician is a friend of mine and when I had asked earlier about having to weigh in she said that yes, I would have to weigh but for an extra fee her scales get stuck on 125. Todd and I were getting ready to leave and we hadn’t weighed, but the scale is right next to the door. I made the mistake of saying, “So I guess we’ll just weigh next week?”

Not only did she say, “Thanks for reminding me,” and make us weigh right then and there, she also wrote THAT down. IN INK! And I had not given her any extra cash so the scale seemed to be more accurate than the 125 I was hoping for.

This is not a diet. It’s not a “plan”. It’s learning how to eat healthy and make the right choices and keep Todd’s sugars less spikey and in a better range without the use of as much medication. I’m honestly looking forward to watching this progress. I want to have more energy and I want to give away my “fat” clothes that are feeling a little snug right now. And I want to be healthy for my future grandkids. And I want to feel comfortable on an airplane. (This might be a stretch because the only way anybody ever feels comfortable on an airplane is if they’re flying First Class and I don’t think getting healthy will be increasing our income any.)

So this morning we started working on the things that Adrianne gave us to work on. I’m excited about the possibilities. I’m pumped up and ready to make this work.

    It takes a little getting used to, but it will be fairly easy to follow and YOU WILL feel better. I need to do that, too. My MIL lived with us off and on for several years, so we cooked to accommodate her needs as a diabetic. We found that we all benefited from it. Good for you and Todd! Rock on!
