So Long Mother of the Year

Taylor catches the high school bus at 6:55. Most mornings I’m still asleep at this time. I wake up enough to hear him call out “goodbye” from the door as he’s leaving, to which I reply “rmpsghs”, which loosely translated means, “Goodbye, Dear. Have a nice day at school. Be sure to bundle up as the wind chill is below zero and make good choices!”

But yesterday, whatever chance I had at Mother of the Year slid from my tenuous grasp with one simple conversation:

T-Money: Terranova testing starts tomorrow so you need to get up early and make me a nutritious, well-balanced breakfast.

Mama-J: *snort* Yeah, right. You think I’m going to get up before 6:00 just to cook you some sausage?

T-Money: It would be kind of nice to see you in the mornings instead of hearing “rmpsghs” from your bedroom when I tell you goodbye.

Mama-J: Okay. I’ll be sure to wake up enough so that I can clearly enunciate as I tell you goodbye.

T-Money: If you don’t get up to make me a healthy breakfast I’ll do poorly on the test and I’ll end up living at home forever.

Mama-J: So you think 5:55 is early enough?

Actions may speak louder than words, but it’s usually my words, not my actions, that get me into trouble. I was the consummate Proverbs 31 woman this morning by getting up and cooking sausage, baking croissants, cutting up fruit and pouring milk. He even called me blessed. And then:

T-Money: Thank you for making this very yummy breakfast.

Mama-J: You’re welcome. Does it meet your pre-test requirements?

T-Money: Yes. I’m sure I’ll do very well now that I’ve had all this brain food.

Mama-J: Good. When are you moving out?

Oh I feel so much better that I’m not the only mother who stays in bed while the kid gets ready for school. I thought I was just lazy. I hate mornings though. Keep me up till 2 or 3 in the morning but don’t make me get up before the sun!! God didn’t intend it that way!!

Well, Jen, at least your sense of humor is well intact after your early morning! I’m most definitely NOT a morning person, either, but since my child isn’t 6 yet, I kinda have to get up if I expect her to get to school. Luckily, she doesn’t have to be there until almost 9:00am, ro I’m sure she’d never be there on time! Better yet, this week is Spring Break, so we can both sleep in if we want to. Unfortunately, she woke up at 4:15 this morning. Good thing I was already awake, wasn’t it? *snort* Actually, I don’t think I’d even really fallen asleep. Dratted insomnia!!But hey, at least I can nap today during the thunderstorms that are supposed to roll in here this afternoon. Spring Break is soooo cool!!Jennifer

My Mom’s idea of making us breakfast was cold cereal and toast. She was out of bed – but not functional in the least. It is the effort that counts!

LOL- I get up with my older two, but it’s definitely a no go as far as actual cooking. According to my friends, moving out once is no prob. Stopping them from returning is an issue.

I can’t wait until I can stay in bed and send the child off to school on his own–LOL.

Jen your conversations with your son remind me so much of those with my own kids. They keep you on your toes. And it does not get any better by the way. lolI was [and am still] not a morning mom either. When they were in HS and had rides then it was up to them to get up and get gone. Course today you get a court summons if your kid is late to homeroom to many time. -grin-love ya, JB

Wellll…we don’t have kids, but I don’t get up with my husband before he leaves for work. He says “goodbye” and I say “rmpsghs” which loosely translates to “bye honey, I love you, don’t drive like an idiot!”
